One of the earliest documents on the Devil’s bridge of Martorell. It was constructed in 1283 on the
foundations of an earlier Roman bridge, and adorned with a stone chapel on top. The bridge was
destroyed in 1939 during the Spanish Civil War, and rebuilt in 1965. It was part of the Roman Via
Augusta, and the only bridge crossing the lower valley of the Llobregat, the second longest river in
Catalonia. The document, made up by the priest and notary public “Guillelmus Batulus” (Guillem
Batlle), confirms that
inhabitants of Cervera are exempted from toll
(taxes due on crossing the
bridge).
