Extensive and enlightening document of the wealthy van Hulthem family of Ghent providing new
information on the genealogy of
Queen Mathilde of Belgium
, wife of the actual King Philippe. The
present document was drawn up by the aldermen and councillors of the city of Ghent, in 1625, on
the death of Martyne Elaut wife of Jan van Hulthem. His inheritance was equally divided among
his 5 children. Each received several houses and parcels of land, as well as money and obligations
totalling nearly 2500 pounds each. Several properties were in Ghent itself, others in neighbouring
areas: Wondelgem, Wetteren, Royagem, Calcken, Velscke, Balegem, Poesele, Baerle(velde?),
Drongen, Oostakker and Lovendegem. The document gives also valuable information about
grandparents, uncles, aunts, stepfather, neighbours, tenants etc. One of the 2 minor sons mentionned
may be the van Hulthem whom King Philip IV of Spain granted arms on July 14th 1659. One
grandson became counsel to the Raad van Vlaanderen. Via this grandson, Mathilde d’Udekem
d’Acoz is now the most famous descendant of Jan van Hulthem. Beside the direct descent from Jan
van Hulthem, she is descended by 2 other routes from his brother and grandfather. The present doc.
provides soms additions and corrections to the recently compiled record of her ancestry. Another
likely descendant is the book collector
Charles J.E. van Hulthem
(1764-1832), whose library was
acquired by the Belgian government in 1836 and formed the core of the new Royal Library.

au Conseil du roi, de “receüils des ordonnances de maintenue de noblesse (...)”. G. Lenoir avait
été chargé avec d’autres de la révision générale des preuves de noblesse. Il tente ici d’obtenir de
faire publier ces preuves. Contient 1 lettre au garde des sceaux (non nommé, Joseph Fleuriau de
Morville?), 1 lettre à Joseph Fleuriau de Morville ou à son fils Charles-Jean-Baptiste, 1 lettre de
Fleuriau de Morville
à Lenoir + la réponse orig. (sign. aut.) dans laquelle il se montre favorable
au projet, “Avertissement” pour une édition future (non réalisée), “Services du sieur Lenoir”,
“Etat des volumes communiquez par M. Lenoir a M. de Clairambault”, “Table des Nobiliaires” et
“Volumes comuniquez par Mr. le noir”. Cette public. ne vit jamais le jour et à la mort de Lenoir, ces
documents qui formaient 50 volumes disposés par ordre de provinces furent réunis au dépôt général
de la Recherche et remis à Clairambault (Archives hist. du Poitou).
