Certains travaux récents de E. Fermi et L. Szilard, qui lui ont été
communiqués en manuscrit, font penser que l’élément uranium
pourrait être transformé en une nouvelle et importante source
d’énergie dans un avenir proche. Il peut devenir possible de créer
une réaction nucléaire en chaîne dans une grande masse d’uranium,
générant de grandes quantités d’énergie et de grandes quantités de
nouveaux éléments de type radium. Ce nouveau phénomène conduirait
également à la construction de bombes et il est concevable que des
bombes extrêmement puissantes d’un nouveau type puissent ainsi
être construites. Une seule bombe de ce type, transportée par bateau
et explosant dans un port, pourrait très bien détruire tout le port et
une partie du territoire environnant. Cependant, de telles bombes
pourraient bien s’avérer trop lourdes pour un transport aérien.

Group of three items given by Albert Einstein to Dr. Edrita Fried,
of which one is relating to the Atomic bomb, the other two items
related to Edrita Fried who helped Einstein draft his letters relating
to the invention.
Dr. Edrita FRIED (1911-1981) was a psychoanalyst who came to America
in 1938 after receiving her Ph.D at the University of Vienna in her native
city. Not long after her arrival in the United States, she met Einstein
and helped him with composing letters in English, in particular the
letter concerning the atomic bomb addressed to President Roosevelt.

Franklin Delano Roosevelt, 2 August 1939, regarding the possibility of
developing an Atomic bomb, signed in full “Albert Einstein,” in English
(Dimensions: 8,6 x 15,5 cm) (light browning and staining).
“Some recent work by E. Fermi and L. Szilard, which has been
communicated to me in manuscript, leads me to expect that the
element uranium may be turned into a new and important source
of energy in the immediate future. It may become possible to set up
a nuclear chain reaction in a large mass of uranium, by which vast
amounts of power and large quantities of new radium-like elements
would be generated. This new phenomenon would also lead to the
construction of bombs, and it is conceivable – though much less
certain – that extremely powerful bombs of a new type may thus be
constructed. A single bomb of this type, carried by boat and exploded
in a port, might very well destroy the whole port together with some
of the surrounding territory. However, such bombs might very well
prove to be too heavy for transportation by air.”
