Calculs mathématiques, probablement des opérations liées au prix
de l’or.
Il y a sur ce feuillet une quinzaine de lignes de calculs mathématiques,
probablement relatifs aux prix de l’or, débutant par des divisions et
des soustractions, suivies de trois lignes séparées : Valeur 1/5 d’une
pièce de 8 ; Valeur 1/5 – 1/250=1/5 1/11 ; Valeur 10 3/5 11 ½. Au-dessous,
d’autres opérations et calculs.
Ces calculs sont liés aux fonctions de Newton à la Monnaie royale
(
Royal Mint
) où il occupa les fonctions de gardien ou
Warden
(1696)
puis de maître ou
Master
(1699). Il a beaucoup réformé le travail de
cette institution, alors au plus mal, augmentant radicalement le cours
de la monnaie à une époque où la pénurie de monnaie menaçait
de paralyser le commerce. La référence dans notre document aux
pièces de 8 et le travail sur les proportions paraissent être liées à cette
période de son travail.

Mathematical calculations, probably ties to the price of gold.
This leaf contains about fifteen lines of mathematical calculations,
likely relative to the price and value of gold, beginning with divisions
and subtractions, followed by three separate lines:
Value 1/5 of a coin of 8; Value 1/5 – 1/250=1/5 1/11; Value 10 3/5 11 ½.
Above are other operations and calculations.
These calculations are tied to Nexton’s association with the Royal
Mint where he was hired first as
Warden
(1696) and after as
Master
(1699). He contributed a lot to reform the institution, at its worst at
the time, and participated in the increase of the currency at a time
when the scarcity of currency could stall commercial exchanges. The
reference here to coins of 8 and the proportional calculations offered
here are ties to that period of work ensured by Newton.
