[Edgar Poe fut le rédacteur en chef de la
revue
The
Southern Literary Messenger
de 1835 à 1837, et lui permit d’augmenter
spectaculairement sa diffusion. Il y publia
des critiques, des essais, des nouvelles et
des poèmes, mais il finit par être renvoyé
pour intempérance alcoolique, malgré toute
l’amitié que lui portait le directeur Thomas
W. White.]
Sur la suggestion du frère de Van Winkle,
éditeur du
Natchez Courier
, Poe s’adresse
à l’avocat pour solliciter une contribution
au
Southern Literary Messenger
, publié
à Richmond par T.W. White. Cela lui
ferait le plus grand plaisir s’il voulait bien
les aider dans ce sens. Mr Peter G. Van
Winkle [futur sénateur] de Parkersburg
(Virginia) a écrit dans leur magazine, et son
frère de Natchez leur a promis son aide.
Ce dernier a informé Poe que son frère
avocat avait très probablement un manuscrit
sur l’étude de la Loi aux U.S., que Poe serait
heureux d’insérer dans le
Messenger
, s’il
ne lui a pas déjà réservé un sort meilleur…
Au-dessous, Thomas Willis WHITE (1788-
1843, ami de Poe et directeur du
Southern
Literary Messenger
) a ajouté 3 lignes
autographes signées offrant des numéros
de sa revue à Van Winkle.

« Dear Sir, at the suggestion of your
brother, the editor of The Natchez
Courier, I take the liberty of addressing
you, and of soliciting a contribution
for the
Southern Literary Messenger
published in this city by Mr T. W. White.
It would afford me the greatest pleasure if
you could aid us in this way. Mr Peter G.
Van Winkle of Parkersburg, V[irgini]a has
written for our magazine, and your brother
in Natchez promises his aid. He informs
us that you have by you (most probably) a
M.S. on the Study of the Law in the U.S. —
which it would give us pleasure to insert in
the Messenger, if you have devoted it to no
better purpose »…
Edgar Allan Poe was the editor of
The Southern Literary Messenger
from 1835
to 1837. There he published reviews, essays,
short stories and poems, but he ended up
being fired for alcoholism, despite all the
friendship the director Thomas W. White
had for Poe.

Poe and Director of the
Southern Literary
Messenger
).
