In early 1929 Lindbergh delivered the first

airmail between North and South America

aboard a Sikorsky S-36 (finding the amphibious

plane better suited for an underdeveloped

region) and continued to pioneer many routes

for both Transcontinental Air Transport and

Pan-American Airways. The photograph

captures Lindbergh as he inaugurated the

seven-day airmail service at the end of April

and beginning of May 1930. The 7,000-mile

route, which he flew in a Sikorsky S-38, began

in Miami, and stopped in Cristobal, the Canal

Zone; Havana, Cuba; and Puerto Cabezas,

Nicaragua before arriving in Buenos Aries,

Argentina. To make the trip, Lindbergh flew

more than 1,000 miles per day, returning to

Roosevelt Field on May 3, 1930.

Lindbergh received the kind invitation

and would very much like to attend the

inauguration of the “Mémorial de l’Escadrille

La Fayette” in upcoming May. He does not yet

know whether he will be in Paris at that date.

The monument was erected in memory of

the fallen aviators during the First World

War and is located in Marnes-la-Coquette.
