Sur son raid avec les forces arabes d’Hussein
ben Ali contre un train transportant des
troupes turques.
[Le major Walter F. STIRLING (1880-1958) était
attaché à l’état-major du général Edmund
ALLENBY (1861-1936), qui commandait
la Force expéditionnaire égyptienne en
Palestine].
Son dernier tour de force était un raid sur un
train à deux locomotives ; ils en ont étripé
une, avec une mine électrique. Cela a mis
pêle-mêle les voitures pleines de Turcs qui
les tiraient. Ils avaient une Lewis, et ont lancé
des balles à travers le côté, alors les Turcs ont
sauté à bas et se sont mis à l’abri derrière le
talus, et ont tiré entre les roues, à 50 mètres.
Puis Lawrence et ses hommes ont essayé
un mortier Stokes, et deux tirs magnifiques
sont tombés au beau milieu d’entre eux.
Ils n’ont pas résisté (12 sont morts sur le coup)
et se sont enfuis vers l’Est… Malheureusement
pour eux, la Lewis a balayé tout le terrain.
Toute l’affaire a duré dix minutes et ils ont
eu comme pertes 70 tués, 30 blessés, 80
prisonniers ; environ 25 se sont échappés.
Quoique l’opération ait moins bien réussi qu’il
ne l’avait espéré, on a salué ses efforts depuis
l’Égypte : la destruction d’une locomotive
turque était utile. ALLENBY a envoyé ses
félicitations, et WINGATE a écrit à Londres
que ce dernier exploit, la destruction d’un
train à deux locomotives, au sud de Maan,
transportant des troupes turques, allait dans
le sens du travail magnifique que Lawrence
avait accompli en Arabie…

Letter sent to Major Walter F. Stirling (1880-
1958), member of the military staff of General
Edmund Allenby (1861-1936), commander of
the British Empire’s Egyptian Expeditionary
Force. The letter describes in detail an attack
on a Turkish train.
Stirling was tied to Allenby’s staff, who would
later enter Damascus along with Lawrence
and earn the rank of Colonel. In this important
letter, Lawrence graphically outlines his raid
on a train following his thwarted attempt to
take the strategically important Mudawara
station, south of Maan. “[...] the last stunt was
the hold up of a train. It had two locomotives
and we gutted one with an electric mine.
This rather jumbled up the trucks which
were full of Turks shooting at us. We had a
Lewis, and flung bullets through the side so
they hopped out and took cover behind the
embankment and shot at us between the
wheels, at 50 yards. Then we tried a Stokes
gun and two beautiful shots dropped right
in the middle of them. They couldn’t stand
that (12 died on the spot) and bolted away
to the East [...] Unfortunately for them the
Lewis covered the open stretch. The whole
job took ten minutes and they lost 70 killed,
30 wounded, 80 prisoners and about 25
got away…”
