Il a reçu sa petite suite philosophique sur les deux principes (« diese
Kleine philosophische Suite “Von den 2 Principien” »), et il apprécie en
particulier sa désignation de la répétition musicale (« die Erwöhnung
der musikalischen Wiederholung ») comme second principe. Mais il
craint que son petit opéra maçonnique ne soit aussi non-américain que
possible (« Dass Ihre kleine maurerische Zauberoper so unamerikanisch
wie möglich ist »), et ne doive être enfoui dans un tiroir jusqu’à ce
que l’Europe s’ouvre à nouveau à leurs méditations (« bis Europa für
unsere Nachdenklichkeiten wieder offen ist »)…

Letter to a Mr. Frankenthal who had sent him “his small philosophical
suite ‘On the 2 principles’” [“Von den 2 Prinzipien”]. Thomas Mann
acknowledges Frankenthal’s work, and especially his mentioning of
musical repetition as the “second principle”, but he fears that his
little masonic opera is as “un-American as possible” and “has to be
stored in the drawer until Europe is again open to our meditations…”.

Il lui est impossible de faire comme il le souhaite. Il est en plein
dans un nouveau livre (
Nexus
) qu’il a mis de côté quatre fois en cinq
ans. Il espère son pardon… Il se rappelle M. de Messières – oui, la
vie est courte ! – et se réjouit du séjour de Moy à Edimbourg… Les
seules études d’après nature qu’il apprécie sont d’artistes chinois ou
japonais ; tout le reste le laisse froid…

Miller writes : « Impossible to do as you wish. Am deep in a new book
(
Nexus
) which I have shelved four times since five years. Hope you
will forgive me». He remembers M. Messières «Yes ! Life is short !»
and is pleased to hear of Moy stay in Edimburg. Miller gives a few
comments on art: « The only studies (sic) of nature I enjoy are by
Chinese or Japanese artists. The rest leaves me cold ».
