Importante lettre au sujet de son célèbre autoportrait aux singes
(Autoretrato con monos).
Elle lui recommande son amie Florence ARQUIN, artiste peintre
mexicaine : elle est non seulement une de ses meilleures amies, mais
aussi une très bonne peintre. Elle a eu une exposition de son travail
au Mexique, avec un grand succès. Frida aimerait que Julien montre
ses œuvres à New York. Elle emporte avec elle, très gentiment, une
des peintures de Frida pour l’apporter de Chicago à Julien:
Frida et
les quatre singes.
Elle espère qu’il l’aimera et le trouvera vendable.
Elle ne pourrait pas en envoyer davantage, car malheureusement, dès
qu’elle termine un tableau, elle doit le vendre pour avoir du fric. Mais
petit à petit, elle en enverra le plus possible, pour pouvoir avoir une
fois l’exposition qu’elle lui a promise. Elle est heureuse d’apprendre
qu’il y a quelque espoir que Julien vienne à Mexico. Elle y connaît un
gars qui fait de beaux cadres, et il serait peut-être possible de trouver
un arrangement pour les envoyer à New York. Elle enverra bientôt des
dessins qu’elle a faits, et que Diego et Florence ont trouvés intéressants…

Frida Kahlo recommends her friend and artist Florence ARQUIN.
“She is not only one of my best friends but also a very good painter.
She had an exhibition of her work in Mexico, recently with a great
success (...) She is taking with her – very kindly – one of my paintings
to deliver it from Chicago to you:
Frida and the four monkeys.
I hope
you will like it and find it sellable. I couldn’t send you more because
unfortunately, as soon as I finish a painting I must sell it to get the
dough. But little by little I will send you as many as I can, to be able
once to have the show I promised you”. She signs “Frida the three
moons” and adds at the end: “I will send you some drawings I made
which Florence and Diego found interesting.”
Florence Arquin, artist and photographer, became a friend to the
Riveras and eventually wrote a book about Rivera’s early experience
as an artist in Europe. Frida’s seems to have had a very open relation
with Julien Levy and doesn’t hesitate to let him know about her
continual interest in Muriel.

GODDARD (1910-1990) a rencontré pour la première fois Frida Kahlo
en 1941, et fut un temps la maîtresse de Diego Rivera.]

Frida Kahlo had just remarried Diego Rivera (following their first divorce
in 1938). The actress Paulette GODDARD (1910-1990) first met Frida
Kahlo in 1941, and was the mistress of Diego Rivera.
