Important scientific letter pertaining to the theory of relativity.
Einstein takes the liberty of writing in German, confident that his
correspondent will find someone to translate his letter. He thanks the
comte de Baillehache for his interesting treatise [
Unités électriques
,
1909] and his friendly letter. He will attempt to answer his query.
It is plausible that electromagnetism will yield way to a statistical theory
comparable to the kinetic theory of gas. Einstein believes also that it
is possible that, within such a theory, the speed of dissemination of
electromagnetism differs from the universal constant. This is all possible
without the theory of relativity being necessarily entrenched in the
nucleus […]
The query is not necessarily related to the question as to whether the
theory of relativity should or not be maintained in its present state.
One can define time in relation to a system of coordinates using a
procedure of propagation, in relation to which spatial directions are
necessarily equivalent.
») x, y, z, t are defined
in relation to a system of coordinates (K) without acceleration. Yet, if the
principle of relativity is sound, that is if the laws of nature are identical
with regard to arbitrary reference systems without acceleration K and
K’, it becomes necessary to transform the transformation equations for
values x y z t for a given event relative to K with regard to the values x’,
y’, z’, t’ concerning K’. One obtains for these transformation equations
adopting the adequate points of departure the following equation :
x² + y² + z²-c²t² = x’² + y’² + z’²-c²t’²
with identical values, and thus the theory of relativity applies, even if
the physical signification of constant c is no longer as self-evident as
is the case in our current theory. This will only complicate further the
derivation of transformation equations from causal facts if we cannot
count on the universal speed of electromagnetic waves.
The theory of relativity (as currently accepted) should be replaced
by another theory of relativity only if new equations relative to
electromagnetics proved to be better that the current existing equations,
that did not react invariably with regard to Lorentz’s transformation, or
naturally if the principle of relativity could not be sustained (existence
of a preferred system of coordinates, light ether at rest). In the current
situation however, it seems likely that the theory of relativity will be
sustained even when the electromagnetic equations are replaced by
