Reçu de 3 marchands et bourgeois parisiens une contribution de 103 livres, 2 sols et six deniers
sur ordonnance du roi Louis XI, “pour subvenir aux affaires de la guerre qu’il fait présentement
contre Charles, duc de Bourgoigne”. Mathieu Beauvarlet fut notaire, secrétaire du roi et “receveur
général de ses finances”. Transcription jointe ainsi qu’une note selon laquelle le parchemin servit
à consolider la reliure d’un post-incunable (1540).

Probably written for Antonio Da Passano (1599-1681), who was the 123rd Doge of Genoa and

Unusual combination of scholarly notes by a
humanist nobleman
and an account book of his
possessions. The Zegers van Wassenhove were lords of Wassenhove (Grotenberge, Baronie of
Zottegem) from the 10th c. until 1795. Two members (Jan and Ghilain) joined the “Eedverbond
der Edelen” (Compromise of Nobles) and moved to the Northern Netherlands. The two parts of this
manuscript were written on inverted pages. The Greek part consists of a collection of lexical notes
on Homer’s Iliad, taken from the extensive 12th-c. commentary by the Byzantine scholar Eustathius
of Thessalonica, perhaps copied from a printed edition (Rome 1542 or Basel 1559). The account
book consists of 2 parts, one by Adrianus (name on f. 2r) for the years 1587-1596, and another one
by his son Philips for 1630, dealing with family possessions in the Lands of Zottegem and Aalst:
Godveerdegem, Strijpen, Erwetegem, Leeuwergem, Grotenberge, St.-Goriks-Oudenhove, Balegem
etc., with 3 loose additions (

by Adolf van Wassenhove, 1588, stuck between ff. 4-5);

one of
1709;
3.
one by a “William de Voerman”, Lede 1508?). The binding structure contains two large
fragments (c. 30,5/31 x 5/5,5 cm) of a rubricated Latin canon law manuscript from the 13th c. (?).
