Breviary with prayers and Psalms, in Latin and French

Manuscript on vellum, c. 13,7 x 10 cm, 18th-c. calf (rubbed), richly gilt spine on 4 raised bands, gilt

sides, red edges, marbl. endpapers, [156] ruled ff., skilfully written in various gothic hands in black/

brown ink, 14 ll. (a few margins sl. soiled or stained); kept in a cloth box. Well-preserved.

Very attractive religious manuscript,

rubricated

throughout, with

hundreds of 2- or 3-line penwork

initials in red or blue, all with gold foil

(some initials extending into the margin), 1 f. with extensive

leafy decoration in the margin, a number of ff. with rectangular horizontal penwork decoration in

red and blue.

: (f. 1-11) French Calendar (lacking “July”), with some typical saints in red

(Pol, Adix, Yves, Eloy, Loys Roy, Andrieu); (f. 12-156) Gospel readings, Psalms and prayers, with

(skilfully repaired with blank ff. as pastedowns, catch and clasp gone), spine on 3 raised bands,

a.e.g. (fading), c. 13,5 x 9,5 cm, 245 ff., quired 1:10, 2:8, 3-19:10, 20:14, 21:10, 22:8, 23:6(?), 24:10

(-1?), numbered 1-10 in pencil, 1-235 in old red ink (blank f. 225 cut out, blank ff. 231-232 bound

at front as pastedown and flyleaf), writing area of f. 8,2 x 5,8 cm, 21 ll., catchwords within penwork

border and centered; kept in a cloth box. Exc. condition.

awarded to Ignatius Riera y Balle by the

University of Cervera in 1784

Rare specimen of a doctoral degree awarded by the University of Cervera (Lleida, Catalonia),

created by Philip V (1683-1746) in 1707, but in 1842 relocated to Barcelona. The student Riera y

Balle was a native of Arens de Mar (Gerona). General text printed 1760 and names and dates added

in handwriting in red and brown ink (margin soiled, sm. marginal tears).

cont. sheep (rubbed), gilt titled spine on 5 raised bands (head and tail def.), gilt sides, sp. edges,

marbl. endpapers, 305-[3 blank] pp., well written in brown ink. Very good condition.

Collection of historical essays, in all probability by the former French Benedictine scholar Rocoles

(1630-1696), in those years settled in the Netherlands. Pp. 244-257 agree with pp. 122-146 of his

“Introduction générale à l’histoire prophane” (4th ed. Paris 1672). On p. 210 there is a reference

to a recent French trsl. of Denis Petau, “Abregé chronologique de l’histoire” (Paris 1682). Old

name on flyleaf “Du Tillet”.
