Very rare
only ed. of the Dutch trsl.
of a popular work on courtesy and manners by S. Guazzo (1530-
1593), 1st publ. Brescia 1574. “La civil conversatione” ranks with Castiglione’s “Courtier” as one
of the most popular and best known books during the Elizabethan period. Written in the form of a
dialogue between Annibal Magnocabello and Guglielmo Guazzo, a Knight who has grown weary of
court life, the work addresses the need for balance in life, covering topics such as education, family
life, society, public behavior and morality. The trsl. contains many Dutch proverbs (listed in the
extensive index). Woodcut mark on title. Ornamental headpieces. Gothic type.
