of Michaelis’ critical text of the Hebrew Bible, with such extensive foot and
shoulder notes (giving both criticism and variant readings) that on some pages they occupy four
or five times as much space as the Bible text itself. Darlow & Moule calls it “
the first attempt
at a critical edition
”. Michaelis (1668-1738), prof. of oriental languages and theology at Halle,
compared 5 manuscripts and 19 printed ed. With
engr. frontisp.
