Lettre à Julius Moritz FEIST (1802-1870). Il
regrette vivement de ne pas avoir eu l’occasion
de faire sa connaissance, lorsque Feist se
présenta avec l’introduction de leur ami, le
comte d’ORSAY. Il espère que la prochaine
fois que Feist se rendra à Londres, il viendra le
trouver chez lui (Devonshire Terrace, Regent’s
Park), où Dickens n’a pu résider depuis son
retour récent en Angleterre, ayant loué sa
maison pendant son voyage à l’étranger…

“I am exceedingly sorry not to have had the
opportunity of making your acquaintance,
when you came to me with so good an
introduction as that of our friend Count
d’Orsay. When you next visit London, I shall
hope to be more fortunate, and that you will
then find me in my own house (Devonshire
Terrace, Regent’s Park) where I have not
been able to reside since my recent return
to England, in consequence of having let
it, during my absence abroad. Allow me
to express the pleasure I have had with the
receipt of your obliging letter; and may except
the assurance of my consideration. I am Sir
Faithfully Yours Charles Dickens.”

Elle est très aimable de lui proposer une
fourchette aussi large, mais il regrette que ce
soit trop tard. Le dernier jour de mai il part
pour Gad’s Hill, et tout engagement fait entre-
temps contrarierait son emploi du temps déjà
fixé, ce qui est incompatible avec son travail.
Son principe a toujours été de rester fidèle
à cette règle, comme un Spartiate, et de se
féliciter (sans malveillance) de son abnégation…
