Première édition collective en hollandais des œuvres mathématiques de Frans von Schooten le jeune
(1616-1661), qui succéda à son père comme professeur des mathématiques à l’université de Leyde.
Cette édition fut publiée avec la première édition hollandaise du célèbre traité sur les probabilités
des jeux par Christiaan Huygens (1629-1695). Cette édition collective est composée de cinq traités
individuels avec une pagination continue, chacun avec sa propre page de titre imprimée et illustrés de
nombreux schémas et diagrammes dans le texte. L’édition contient :
- Verhandeling van vijftig arithmetische en viftijg geometrische Voorstellen.
- Ontbinding der simple meet-konstige werck-stucken.
- Apollonii Pergaei herstelde Vlacke Plaetsen.
- Tuych-werckelijcke beschrijving der Kegel-sneden op een vlack.
- Dertich af-deelingen van gemengde stoffe.
Le traité sur les probabilités de Huygens occupe les pages 485-500 et il est suivi du
Tractaet der
Perspective, ofte schynbaere teycken-Konst
.
Schooten fut l’un des premiers à étudier la géométrie de Descartes, et c’est lui qui en réalisa la traduction
en latin (Leyde, 1649).
Titre général en partie collé au plat avec marge intérieure déchirée, petit travail de vers à la fin sans
atteinte au texte.
Rare first Dutch collected edition of the mathematical works of Frans van Schooten the Younger,
professor of mathematics at the university of Leyden. It contains here for the first time Christiaan
Huygens’ work on probabilities in the Dutch translation. Schooten was one of the first to study Cartesian
mathematics and is the author of the first Latin translation of Descartes’
Géométrie
(Leyden 1649).
