Description
1. “Deutung der grewlichen Figurn Bapstesels/ zu Rom funden” (= f. 184v), depicting a beast supposedly discovered in the Tiber in 1496. It is a composition of an ass, a cock, a snake or lizard, a man’s face, and a woman’s bosom. Luther used the image to satirize Pope Alexander VI. 2. “Deutung des Münchkalbs zu Freiberg” (= f. 187r), depicting a malformed cattle fetus used as an allegory for monasticism. The crafty woodcuts by L. Cranach the Elder (1472-1553) were 1st published in 1523 with a commentary by Luther and Melanchthon.
