Description
Antverpiae, in aedibus Joan. Steelsii, 1550. In-8° : [8]-144 lvs; 3 plates (+/- browned, marginal dampstains, handwritten provenances or notes on title-page). Contemporary binding : calf, decorated boards with blind fillets and one large roll-stamp, ribbed spine (soiled, spine reinforced, slightly rubbed, small lacks, corners dulled, blind stamped provenance on upper board, handwritten notes on upper pastedown and flyleaf).
Second edition of the translation by Guillaume Van Male published the same year as the first Latin edition and the first Dutch translation, also by Steelsius. Work describing the wars of Charles V against the German Protestant princes in 1546 and 1547, illustrated with 3 foldings plates (map of Germany, battles of Ingolstadt and Muhlberg) and 2 full-pages (view of Wittenberg and arms of Charles V). The Spanish historian Avila (c. 1490-c. 1560) was ambassador of Charles V in Rome and accompanied him to some battlefields. The editio princeps in Spanish was published in Venice in 1548.
