Contemporary binding : calf, blind decorated boards with frames of fillets and floral roll-stamps, ribbed spine with blind fillets, title with pen on the fore-edge (turn ins lacking, white leather stuck on a rectangular design, wormholes in the lower board, light scratches, three corners strongly dulled, stamps on the upper flyleaf).
First edition of this abridgement by Josias Simler of the "Bibliotheca universalis" of Gesner (1st ed. : 1545-1549, 4 vol.). The "Bibliotheca" of the Swiss naturalist (15161565) is considered as the first bibliography and gathers all the books in Greek, Latin and Hebrew from the beginning of printing. This epitome, enlarged with 1.000 authors, is an authorized version. An unauthorized one was published by the Alsacian humanist Conrad Lycosthenes published in 1551. Historiated initial letter at the dedication and printer's mark on title-page. The theologian Simler (1530-1576) was Gessner's first bibliographer and one of his closest friends.
