Description
1588. In-f° : [24]-432-[18]-[2 bl.] pp.; 73 plates (foxing, stains, some pp. slightly yellowed, dampstains on some plates in the end, marginal tears, one without loss in the engraving 69 and one repaired in last plate). Contemporary binding : flexible vellum, ribbed spine, author's name with pen on the tail edge (lacks of vellum, stains, ties lacking, handwritten provenance crossed off on the upper flyleaf).
Third Italian edition, the second by Plantin (1st Plantinian edition in 1581, original in 1567 by Silvius). This abundantely illustrated chorographic essay starts with, respectively, an allegorical representation of the Netherlands, an engraved title, the coats-of arms of the 17 provinces with the arms of Philip II in the centerpart, an allegorical representation of Arts and Sciences with the portrait of Philip II and a woodcut of the coat-of-arms of Guicciardini. The 78 engravings with maps, plans and views were printed separately and inserted according to the owners' wishes. Our copy with n° 1 bound between pp. [24]-1, n° 5 printed on pp. 82-83 and the remaining 76 subjects engraved on 73 leaves at the end of the book. All etchings are similar to the French 1582-edition, the plan of Antwerp (n° 5) however was slightly adapted after the rebuilding of the ramparts due to the city's capitulation in 1585. Furthermore, this edition contains nice woodcut borders, ornamental initials and a decorative cartouche on p. 81.
