Very large in-f° (63 x 49 cm) : frontispice-ix-[1]-42 pp.; 116 plates (marginal tear at frontispiece repaired, fold in the title-page, pale and small marginal dampstain, light foxing at some text leaves and at the margins of most plates). Contemporary binding : threequarter red morocco, ribbed spine with gilt floral decoration, gilt edges (slightly rubbed).
First and only (?) edition of this compilation taken from the original plates restored by James Heath and complete with 156 engravings on 116 plates (in accordance with the table of contents), a biographical essay and explanations of the subjects by John Nichols. Monumental testimony of the prints by one of England's most important pictorial artists, political satirist, social critic and editorial cartoonist, author of "Beer Street", "Gin Lane" and many others. Copy with very good prints on large and heavy paper.
