Le naturaliste bavarois Peter Kolbe (1675-1726) vécut dans la colonie hollandaise du Cap de 1705 à 1713. Sa description de l'Afrique du Sud, publiée en allemand en 1719, connut un vif succès et fut traduite en anglais, en néerlandais et en français.
Mendelssohn présente cette édition comme « the best Dutch edition, with excellent full-page engravings ». L'illustration se compose d'un titre-frontispice allégorique, un portrait de l'auteur, 6 cartes à double page ou dépliantes et 44 (sur 46) planches hors texte, le tout finement gravé sur cuivre par Elgersma, Houbraken, Philips, Wandelaer, Pool et Zeeman.
