Description
Basileae [ Basel], (apud Michaelem Isingrinium et Henricum Petri), 1538. In-f° : [20]-230 pp. (2 folding maps lacking, dampstains and mould spots passim, some paper restaurations). Early 19th Century binding : half leather with corners, boards of marbled paper, gilt stamped flat spine with label (soiled, corners lacking, joints partly split, spine scratched). RARE FIRST ILLUSTRATED EDITION of these texts compiled by the latin grammarian Solinus (c. 230 A.D.) with commentary by the German cosmographer Sebastian Münster (1488-1552) who delivered also the illustrations : 2 full page maps (Africa and Europe) and 16 maps or plans in the text. Contains a short description of the ancient world, some parts of Pliny's "Natural History" and the geographical texts of Pomponius Mela. Fine typography with decorative historiated initials; printer's mark on the title.
