Antverpiae, [ Anvers], Aegid. Coppenius Diesth., ( 1571). In-f° : [8, engraved title included] lvs, 53 maps, [31] lvs (large marginal dampstains at first and last leaves, small paper restaurations at corners, small marginal loss of paper on A7 and d4 not affecting the text, clear brown staining and light copper oxidation on green coloured areas, contemporary ms annotations in the margins of textleave 44). Contemporary binding : calf, boards encircled with blind or gilt frames of fillets and roll-stamps, inscription "Theatrum 1572" stamped in a medaillon within a gilt fleuron on upper board, lower board with a central blind stamped fleuron, blind decorated ribbed spine (scratches, repairs at spine and corners, some small spots and a few numbers in pen on upper board, ties lacking, flyleaves renewed). BEAUTIFUL AND COMPLETE COPY WITH OLD COLOURING of the second edition printed by Gielis Coppens van Diest (1st edition : 1570). Engraved allegorical title with female personnifications of the 5 continents and 53 maps with Latin text by Abraham Ortelius (1527-1598) on verso. THE FIRST LARGE MODERN ATLAS and a landmark in the history of cartography outlining the standards of all later atlases with text and maps in a uniform format and presentation.
The present Latin edition is provided with 3 scientific appendices: the "Catalogus Auctorum" with 94 names, the letter "De Mona Druidum Insula... Epistola" by the British geographer Humphrey Llwyd (c. 1527-1568), and -new for this edition- the "Synonymia Locorum Geographicorum" or alphabetical list of toponyms enhanced from 48 pages in the 1st edition to 56 in the present one.
