Montanus and Vrientius, margins of double-portrait and first lvs of vol. I. strengthened, edges of title "Galliae"
trimmed, idem of maps "Bolonia" and "Lacus Lemanni", a few small tears without loss to some taxt lvs, water
stain on upper corner vol. II, some errors in pagination, most of the maps wrinkled, central vows of a few maps
split in lower margin).

Hondius" atlas with the double-portrait
figuring Gerard Mercator (1512-1594)
and Henricus Hondius the Younger
(1597-1651) seated face to face at a
table, both with a globe in the hand,
a map of Europe hanging at the wall.
Divided in 7 parts (4 with an engraved
title in a cartouche) : 1° Continents,
Northern and Eastern Europe (with the
world map "Orbis Terrae Compendiosa
Descriptio" of 1587), 2° Spain and
Portugal, 3° France and Switzerland, 4°
The Netherlands, 5° Germany, 6° Italy
and Southeastern Europe and 7° Africa, Asia and America. IN ALL 156 old coloured maps
followed by 8 indexes. The first edition of Mercator's world atlas was published posthumous
in Duisburg in 1595 and contained maps.
