TRESSAN LOUIS-ÉLISABETH DE LA
VERGNE, COMTE DE (1705-1783)
ÉCRIVAIN ET PHYSICIEN
Né au Mans, le comte de Tressan fit
d’abord une belle carrière militaire;
gouverneur de Toul, grand maréchal
du roi Stanislas à la cour de Lunéville,
il fut élu membre de l’Académie
des Sciences en 1749 pour ses
travaux sur l’électricité, et en 1780 à
l’Académie française; collaborateur
de l’
Encyclopédie
, il fit, par ses
adaptations, redécouvrir les romans
de chevalerie.
Born in Le Mans, the Count of Tressan
is credited with a great military career.
Governor of Toul, grand marshal of King
Stanislas at the court of Lunéville, Tressan
was admitted to the Academy of Science
in 1749 for his work on electricity and
later made a member of the Académie
Française in 1780. He was a contributor to
the Encyclopédie and is also credited with
the rediscovery of chivalric literature.
