Épidermures John Soane et William Turner se connaissaient depuis 1802, date à laquelle ils furent tous deux élus membres de la Royal Academy of Arts. Le premier y enseignait l’architecture et le second la perspective. Leur admiration mutuelle se doublait d’une passion commune pour la pêche : “No one was a more frequent or welcome guest of the Soanes over this period than Turner. The two men’s shared love of fishing offered long companionable hours passed together on river banks. Neither man a natural intellectual, they found common ground in their dogged investigations of architecture. Soane periodically lent Turner money” (Gillian Darley, p. 163) Mais c’est après la mort du mécène et ami de Turner, Walter Fawkes (1769-1825), que leurs liens se resserrèrent. William Turner trouva l’espace, la solitude et la compagnie nécessaires à la poursuite de son œuvre dans la maison de son ami John Soane, architecte et collectionneur, au 12 Lincoln’s Inn Fields à Londres.
